Whether it’s because you do not speak/write English very well or because you were never great at studying for tests, some are worried that they will fail the English and civics test.
For those of you who do not speak English well, you may be exempt from the English language requirement.
Also, you may be eligible to apply for a disability exception to the English and civics testing requirement for naturalization due to a physical/developmental disability or mental impairment.
It should be because the truth is that citizenship eliminates the risk of deportation. Although one never plans on facing criminal charges or legal troubles, you never know. Some crimes may lead you to be deported.
Or, maybe you feel like you just haven’t needed it yet. Most people worry about citizenship when they need to travel abroad, and maybe you have no travel plans in the near future. However, you never know what emergency could come up requiring your international travel. It is easier to apply before this becomes necessary, as the process does take some time. There are benefits to traveling as a US Citizen. For example, you may be able to travel to several countries without the need for a visa.
As of 1/31/17, the fee for naturalization is $640, and an additional $85 biometric fee may be required (totaling $725) to apply for naturalization. This fee increases regularly. In fact, on December 23, 2016 USCIS fees increased for many forms and applications, including the naturalization/citizenship application. If you do not apply now, the fees will probably go up by the time you apply.
However, you may request a fee waiver.
Further, the risk of entering removal proceedings may make the fees/costs associated significantly higher.
Also, as a Lawful Permanent Resident (green card holder) you need to renew your green card every 10 years. As of 1/31/17, the fee is $455 and an additional $85 biometric fee may be required. If you lose your green card, you will also need to apply for another one and pay this fee.
