Marriage-Based Immigration Cases: Helpful Documents to Prove The Bono Fides of Your Marriage

 
 
 
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Birth Certificate of Children born to you and spouse together
  • Documents that show that you jointly own property
  • Proof that you two have co-mingled your finances
  • Lease agreement showing joint tenancy of a common residence
  • Affidavits sworn or affirmed by 3rd party that has personal knowledge of the bona fides of your marriage. The Affidavit must include the following information about the person making the affidavit:
     
    • Full name
    • Address
    • Date of birth
    • Place of birth
    • Relationship to petitioner or beneficiary
    • Information and details about how the person gained the knowledge of your marriage
       
  • Photos of you two together with family and/or friends at your wedding, engagement, etc.
  • Joint Income tax returns
  • Utility bills with both your names
  • Joint savings/checking accounts
  • Letters and cards to each other
  • Telephone records of you two calling each other
  • Photo ID cards showing common resident address. It helps if two have the same last name, but it is not required
  • Letter from employer stating that your records indicate the marriage/ have been changed to indicate the marriage
  • Life insurance policy with spouse as named beneficiary
  • Medical/health insurance with spouse’s name as a member or beneficiary
  • Receipts of large purchases made together (with both names included)
  • Any bills/receipts with both names and/or same address
